BUSINESS ETHICS
QUESTION 1: WHAT ARE THE TWO BUSINESS ETHICAL ISSUES THAT WE MIGHT FACE IN THE NEAR FUTURE CAREER? WHAT WOULD BE THE NORMATIVE THEORIES SAY ABOUT THESE ISSUES AND WHY?
1.DISCRIMINATION: Discrimination is one of the ethical problem we see in the business society. This is where unequal treatments are made based on the efficiency one worker produce than the other. Letting a person seen as lesser than should always makes a human feel embarrassed about themselves, ultimately breaking their will to work. This way, the company goes through slight down slide year by year, until people recognize that business as a vulgar organization and gets a permanent bad reputation. Reputation, being one key factor to business growth, if can not be controlled, will crash at sudden moments or face losses in the long term. However the reputation goes bad, only shows one door. That is degradation. Being careful about the competition in the current flowing market, one business simply can not make a stand in the rat race. In order to gain higher position in the marketplace, the company must stay focused on its long term goal. There goes an African proverb that says, “If you want to go fast, go alone, but if you want to go further, go together”. Fast success does not bring long term goals in real life. Where a company or an organization works like a family in themselves, goes further in the business field. Because businesses are nothing but manpower. The higher the efficiency of the manpower is available, the greater production and customer satisfaction can be achieved. Discrimination works just like water to the burning fire. It puts out the morality to oneself which most certainly and very consequentially hits the willpower or dedication of a human in their designated workplace. Management staffs must be aware of such discrimination, bullying or moral lynching going inside those office buildings. One thing to remember, if you are not treating your own employees right, you most certainly are not pleasing your customers either. keeping that in mind, HR management department must run checks throughout the whole day and monitor behaviors, work ethic, will power, and friendliness in that environment where all the people are working. Discrimination can occur based on different aspects of a human. It could be race, religion, skin complexity, age, gender, or maybe even to a person that seem inferior from the inside than others. These problems, made in bigger scale can and will create discrepancies within the company ultimately resulting in a lack of work done or production. Needless to say, this must be one of the main reason why a business start to decay. Helping the others where they lack will always make them feel comfortable under a constant sense of being less judged and feel more accepted. This eliminates the fear of doing something wrong or messing things up. Fixing an error on behalf of someone else, lets them work confidently with a desire of making necessary changes for the betterment of work.
2.ABUSE OF THE LEADING AUTHORITY OR HIGHER STAFFS: This being one of the same problem as explained above, has also the same effects whatsoever. Maybe a little bullying or a discrimination is not involved but rather, higher positioned staffs behaving badly and conducting rudely with the junior worker ultimately takes away the motivation to dedicate into work. As a senior staff, or a higher leveled staff, one should always be aware about the workers that have lesser knowledge gathered and help them by educating more. There is a thin line between complaining and rectifying. The more an organization looks forward to rectify the workers rather than pointing them out and pay disrespect for their ignorance, the further away the workers go. And what good can a company do when it has least manpower involved or manpower that do not mix up well within themselves? Abuse of a staff can include unreasonable working overtime or asking for help that are quite unfair to ask for in the first place. It could be frightening a worker or threaten a worker putting their job at risk for even slightest mistakes they commit. Punishing workers who become unable to do a job or make mistakes in them. It must be understood that it is only humans that make mistakes and also it is only humans that can do the job being aware to new openings or opportunities for the company or organization. The higher post staff, or a senior staff, must have had made mistakes in their way of the place they have made till date. Empathy can be a thriving medication for these kinds of problems experienced in a company or an organization. While a senior or higher staff tries to put themselves into the others shoes, recognize the problem and rectify it for the better, always allows the flow of work to run smooth.
Misusing the higher post can make wrong reports for a certain or targeted employer to make them look bad or have bad records for the sake of a personal revenge. Damaging the path of one worker towards the future to some extent. Having favorites also make the other workers lose interest and ethic in work. As they experience bias and lack of credit distribution, they start losing their energy and will power to make themselves bring the best in them. As there is no potential seen, lesser amount of work is resulted also sacrificing honesty in the long run. Higher staffs or managers can get themselves the majority or the whole credit on behalf of the actual worker who finishes the job. This too, promotes dishonesty which can be a slow or fast decay depending on the level of abuse going on inside the company. While a worker gets motivated by equality, fairness, honesty and diligence as a way of working, they start revealing their best selves, dedicating the fullest of what they have within them as a potential. Honesty is the best policy, as the world have said, is something well said.
QUESTION 2: WHICH OF THE ETHICAL ISSUES SEEM TO BE THE LEAST OF A PROBLEM AND WHY IS IT SO?
1.PRIVACY: An issue that is expected to be least problematic is still a problem by itself. But relatively or comparatively, that particular issue will have or expected or anticipated to have the least impact on the growth of a company or an organization. To mention an ethical issue that has the least chance or scope to become problematic, it must be regarding privacy. Privacy can be a big issue but while compared to the issues above, it has the least impact on a company.
Privacy means the safe place or simply the place a person holds to themselves. Something that is confidential or has a need to be kept under the rug. like family, personal life, personal choices etc. Privacy kept confidential is good but not to the extent where it affects your work life and working experience. The time that is allotted to you for your work, must solely be spent for that purpose only. As humans, we can not be effective like a machine does, which is exactly why we should be putting efforts as well as short little breaks to maintain the balance. The balance of effort and exhaustion must be kept under supervision as exhaustion may lead to permanent loss of interest, lack of mindfulness and eagerness to get the job done. Preferably, in an effective way. A job can be done in several ways. We must opt for the way that is the most effective and less time consuming. Such a way can lead to faster and greater works done in least amount of time being spent for. Privacy can be withstood as a necessity of importance of your life for some moment in between of your work. The work remains at the first priority still. While your purpose is the thing that you value the most, you can be excused for times you spend taking a moment or two out for your own self. Otherwise the risk of heavy breakdown of a worker can be proven as much harmful for any company or an organization.
But companies or organizations have reported of the worker taking too much time out for a break, which makes the work force go down which produces lesser amount of work done under normal circumstances. This is completely counter productive and leads to general degradation of a company. These becomes an important issue that must be monitored time to time for improved quality production. Businesses run by moving. A rolling stone gathers no moss. Such is a business. It only stays up if kept up by time. Gradual but small increments are more effective than seasonal growth. seasonal growth complements seasonal stagnation. Seasonal stagnation is dangerous for a company as stagnation is considered a loss. as days go by, money always decreases as daily lifestyle has to be kept maintained. In order to make profits, a company must take steps if keeping the business up at all seasons. Also keeping in mind that a worker must have days off to his own according, the company must be adjusting enough so they can give the worker some paid leave or occasional day offs. privacy, once again, is something achieved after a certain amount of diligence have been put in. privacy is not an excuse for lags made in work. often times it is the workers that are found to be ignorant dealing with time than the higher officials are imposed to be. Privacy must be respected in order to have it back too. once the authority knows that privacy is being mistreated, then they hold the complete right to interfere in between the privacy s long as it is being hosted within the premises of the work. privacy can be bung in the washroom for a long time to taking unnecessary day offs just for the sake of privacy. Of course there are restrictions about actions that can be taken within the office premise, which should not and does not include raiding inside the washroom nor to the place where the workers stay. But it does include monitoring your habits about taking break time, working ability, working enthusiasm, behavior and code of conduct for other workers, your ability to work as a team, your ability of coping up while unexpected problems occur. This solely does not mean a monitoring over your personal life.
It must be admitted that professionals have been knowing or gathering information about their workers and their personal life. That to some extent can be remarked as questionable. One professional can never have the right to interfere in between the personal life of any co worker. Such cases are subject to be objected and stopped before any further advancement made into ones personal life. But that can not mean such incidents could be stereotyped over any company that exists in the market. Companies and organizations exists because of their own need of growth and in such cases, interfering in a workers life is not so productive of an idea. Rather it should be the best interest for an ideal professional to leave some space for someones personal use to let them be more productive, at their own sweet will. If something has to be forced to do, it is probably of not the best thing going on, or not the best thing to expect quality or higher levels of dedication. While the higher staffs let the workers on their own and simply put them on small amount of goals each day. This lets both the higher staffs and the workers do things in their own uniform pace, ultimately creating proper harmony and synchronicity in between both the parties. Harmony and synchronicity even under a low but uniform pace is reported to be more successful in the long run. creating small but steady steps towards the goal is a very obvious way of reaching heights in absolutely no time.
WHO ARE THE AFFECTED STAKE HOLDERS AND HOW TO CATEGORIZE THEM ACCORDING TO SALIENCE MODEL FROM MITCHELL, AGLE AND WOOD?
The most affected stake holders are the ones that bid loads on their belief and intuition based on their gained experience and knowledge over the years in the business market. Although they are widely experienced and knowledgeable, mistakes can be made regardless of the age, experience or post of work. Stake holders relate more with attributes of salience, legitimacy, power and urgency. Reports have shown that stake holders that valued more about attributes of salience gathered the most profit as an annual turnover or customer satisfaction. Stake holders that have attributed over legitimacy also kept things clean and smooth flowing while the question came to annual revenue or profit. Stake holders that went more for power over everything else have succeeded initially rather than facing a long term success in a uniform manner. Other stake holders that have chosen urgency as an attribute of choosing suitable business have came across potential works and needs of human rather than showing huge profit margins annually. Mitchell, Agle and Wood also agrees to the fact that in such order, we can categorize companies or firms, groups or even organizations in a list. Their findings about these things have made normative theories look more relevant in today’s point of view. Normative theories have been around the corner for quite some time but their relevance were not much anticipated in the field of business. At least not in the quite long run it can be seen. Mitchell, Agle and Wood have stepped one step forward to prove that normative theories are as important as to count profits at the end of each year. Writings published on their work has shown how much normative theories have come to relevance as the complexity of business modules are growing at a very higher rate. As the competitive market rises high, the need for a salience model has become clear as water with time. Bringing normative theories come to play. Theoretically, any model or theory followed perfectly, must bring the expected result but such is not always the case for the real world. As long as salience models, their categorization and normative theories stay under the rug, these real life problems will keep occurring, says Mitchell, Agle and Wood. While they have made important discoveries about normative theories, the world has stared to focus more and more on normative theories and less on traditional money oriented or profit oriented business models.
QUESTION 4: WHAT IS THE ONE ETHICAL TOPIC OR ISSUE THAT CAN BE ADDED TO THE UNIT AND WHY?
After all the ethical topics explained above, nepotism can be one ethical issue that can be added into the unit.Nepotism overlooks on talent or righteousness and opts for unfair but favorite persons getting the credit or the job. Such unfair situations are not acceptable in a place of business, indicating another reason for slow decay.
